New Terraces and Pit Greenhouse

It's been a busy year, so busy that we've not had much time to add blogs to the community, anyway, here I am with news. Last November we began receiving volunteers from the workaway program, an international web community of volunteers and over seventy people turned up in the course of the next…

Not enough detail for me...

Hi all, I was pleasantly surprised to see that someone had posted a reply to my blog on this site, but when I went to view it, well it turned out to be uselessly vague, had no questions related to my description and the poster had no website listed on their profile yet their post included a email address @live.com which appears to be a free microsoft email. And yet something "important" to tell/share with me. Happy to share what I know with anyone who actually reads my description and shares…

Map/plan Of Our Land Here In La Junta

This map, lovingly drawn by Konomi, shows the work that has been done on our land over the last four years. We consider things 80% complete and things to be done over the next year include the completion of our guest house, a covered walkway/kitchen space to the greenhouses (which we are presently working on) and the completion of a bathing area complete with hot tub fired by a rocket stove that will use the twigs and branches which we can now coppice fron the bushes that have grown all over…

Late Winter Multi-Coloured Potatoes

EN/ES/ Konomi harvested ten kilos of potatoes from one of our Hugelkultur gardens. It's was a nice harvest of four varieties, three very rare which originate from the island of Chiloe, the large island that sits just off the coast of Chilean Patagonia. Chiloe is known as one of the homes of the potato, along with Peru and they are delicious. One day we'll make a special trip to Chiloe in search of many more varieties.

Did you know: The first 1000 bags we used in our Patagonian house building project were Re-Used.

Back in 2009 when we arrived in Patagonia to build on the land we bought two years earlier, we first ordered 1000 used polypropylene feed & fertilizer bags to aid in the construction process. The bags had been recollected by the distributors from the farmers they had sold them to, after the said farmers had used their contents. They were of varying sizes and quality, many were laminated, some were not.

As is usual for products delivered to Patagonia, the way in…

It's been a while since we last posted on Our Little Thing. We've been busy, building paths, creating the gardens and most recently deeply embedded in the world of fairy tales that I have been creating for years and are now in the process of turning them into a series of E Books . Each story is illustrated,…

Picnic Zone Added To Greenhouse And Pond.

The earth we've dug out to create the pit style greenhouse has been placed into earthbags and used to create a path to walk on and a the new pond to feed the plants. In the process we have created a new comfort zone, where we will make a bench, plant roses and have a nice picnic view zone.

This large mound of earth in the corner contains good soil that drains well and that we hope is suitable for cantaloupes and watermelons, a crop, up until now, not grown…

Finishing The Interior 内装が出来上がり始めました

We`ve finally got around to finishing the interior of the house. And I`ve decided to take a siesta! A great addition has been the very comfortable queen sized futon. Walls have been lined with Tepa, a local wood, and jute, which allows the earthbag walls to continue to breathe, which makes the air…

Turf Wall Almost Complete

It's taken some time, but the turf wall I've been building almost completely surrounds the house and gardens. I just need to make a couple of gates and we'll be able to get the ducks. I have already begun planting local bushes, Chilco, that have lovely red and purple flowers, on top of the new wall. This should look very beautiful.

The photo #2 shows the new terraces I've created while getting the turf for the wall. We'll plant them more…
